In the course of my travels in the islands over the past 15 years, I often come across a place that has a particular resonance. Here are some of them......

The remarkable art deco town of Lakki on the island of Leros. Built as a supreme model of the style - on the instructions of Mussolini, - it is characterised by stylish civic and commercial buildings, and wide, sweeping boulevards.

The island of Lipsi has retained its charm as a sleepy, traditional island, maintaining local customs, traditions and marking the occasion of festival events in true island spirit.

The colourful neo-classical houses tumbling down the hillside to the harbour front of Symi are as spectacular a sight you will see anywhere.

The almost surreal atmosphere of Ag. Nikolas on Symi. The clear, turquoise waters are backed by a cliff so sheer that the only way to get to the beach is by taxi boat. A wonderful sense of being cut off from this world!

The seaside hamlet of Armenistis on Ikaria.

Tilos - an island that has kept its simplicity and slow pace of life.

This little church along a high-up coastal walk from the Old Village on Alonissos is one of the more unusual ones I have come across. Completely isolated. A wonderful place to sit and enjoy a quiet moment.
