![]() Playing a traditional instrument |
The most recognisable Greek musical instrument is the bouzouki- the mandolin-like instrument that has been made famous by the music of such films as "Never on a Sunday, and "Zorba the Greek". The strains of the bouzouki seem to be lurking just beneath the surface of almost every piece of Greek music, from rebetika to contemporary pop music. It is probably the single instrument that makes Greek music so quintessentially……Greek! And, which makes it so pleasant and relaxing to listen to. Other ancient musical instruments still played in Greece today are, the gaida (a bagpipe goatskin), the pipiza or zournas (a reed instrument with a piercing sound), the floghera (flute), the santouri (a type of dulcimer played with a small padded hammer), and the outi (a large-bellied string instrument resembling a lute). The bouzouki, violin and lyre are very popular instruments for dances. |
