The ouzerie is one of two very traditional types of café/bar that one finds in Greece, today. The other is the kafeneion.

Ouzeries are "no-frills"
bars where the locals (male, female, children) gather to enjoy a glass of ouzo
.or
anything else, for that matter. Ouzo, of course, is the traditional drink, though.
What is special about an ouzerie is that the drink will be accompanied by a
whole host of little platters with meat, small fish, tomatoes, boiled baby potatoes,
tzatziki and so on. The real treat, though, is the delicious serving of grilled
octopus.
In the metropolitan areas one may have to order these plates of savouries separately.
On small islands, though, these delicious tit-bits are usually included in the
price of the drinks. It's marvellous; the plates just keep coming! A visit to
a traditional ouzerie is a must on any visit to Greece.
Kafeneion are also very traditional cafes, but it is more of a coffee bar, where traditionally the older men gather to sip Greek coffee whilst reading newspapers and discussing and dissecting the latest news.
PS. My favourite ouzo is Samos Ouzo !
